Chicago Pride Guide 2016
After everything that happened in Orlando, this year’s Pride means more than ever. Celebrating love of all kinds, Pride is one of Chicago’s biggest celebrations all year long. There are loads of live performances, contests, parties, talks, and so much more to enjoy at the fest, and then of course, next weekend’s annual parade. The Chicago Pride website has the low down on events and tips, but we condensed some of it down for a pocket friendly Chicago Pride Guide for 2016.
When is Pride?
The fest is this weekend, Saturday, June 18 and Sunday, June 19 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The parade is next Sunday, June 26 at 12 p.m.
What are the Events Happening at the Festival?
How did Pride Start?
From the Pride Website: “The annual Pride Celebration commemorates the rebellion of LGBT patrons of the Stonewall Inn in New York City’s Greenwich Village in response to a routine police raid on June 27, 1969. The following year, a “Gay-In” that took place on June 27, 1970 that was the early progenitor of the current Pride Celebration. Since 1972, the event has been held every year, Since its modest beginnings, Chicago Pride has grown to be one the largest and most well-known Pride events in the world. Pride has come to symbolize several things: the long history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer dignity, the freedom of all people to meaningfully and proudly express their sexual and gender identities, and the commitment of LGBT people to combating oppression.”

Nope! Free free free!
Is it Safe to Go to Pride this Year?
“We will not succumb to terrorists,” says Rahm Emmanuel. We agree. Celebrating love in all its forms is not something we Chicagoans will sacrifice. Instead of cowering in fear, Pride goers will be standing in solidarity against hate.
